Sewing and Stitching

Learn foundational sewing techniques, machine handling, stitching and garment-making basics.

What you will learn

  • Threading, tensioning and caring for a machine
  • Straight, zigzag and reverse stitching with control
  • Taking measurements that actually fit a body
  • Reading and laying out a simple pattern
  • Cutting fabric on grain, and why it matters
  • Seams, hems, darts, zips and buttonholes

Tools you will handle

  • Domestic and industrial sewing machines
  • Overlocker for finishing seams
  • Shears, rotary cutter and seam ripper
  • Tape measure, tailor chalk and pattern paper
  • Pressing iron and board

By the end of the course

Make a garment

A finished piece you cut, sewed and pressed yourself.

Fix and alter

Take up a hem, replace a zip, repair a seam.

Work to a measurement

Turn a body measurement into a pattern into a piece that fits.

Safety first

Nobody touches a tool before the induction.

Every learner completes a safety induction on day one and works under supervision throughout. Protective equipment is issued at the start of the course.

  • Needle safety and keeping fingers clear of the presser foot
  • Safe use of shears and rotary cutters
  • Iron and steam burns
  • Tying back hair and loose clothing near moving machinery

What you go home with

Learners who complete the course and meet the attendance requirement receive an EILA certificate of completion, signed by the principal. Each certificate carries a QR code, so a school, college or employer can verify it instantly.

How you are assessed

Practical work is judged on what you can actually do, not on an exam paper. Your instructor rates each competency as you progress, and those ratings decide whether you are signed off for a certificate.
