Carpentry

Work with timber, joints and finishes, and learn how furniture and structures are put together.

What you will learn

  • Timber species, grain and how wood moves
  • Measuring, marking and cutting to a line
  • Cutting basic joints by hand
  • Safe use of the common power tools
  • Assembly, gluing, clamping and squaring up
  • Sanding and finishing to a standard

Tools you will handle

  • Hand saws, tenon saw and coping saw
  • Chisels, mallet and marking gauge
  • Try square, sliding bevel and marking knife
  • Planes, both hand and power
  • Drills, drivers and the bench sander

By the end of the course

Cut a real joint

A halving and a mortise-and-tenon that fit without gaps.

Build a piece

A small stool or box, assembled square and finished properly.

Sharpen and set up

A blunt chisel is a dangerous chisel; you will keep yours sharp.

Safety first

Nobody touches a tool before the induction.

Every learner completes a safety induction on day one and works under supervision throughout. Protective equipment is issued at the start of the course.

  • Machine guards, and never removing them
  • Push sticks and keeping hands out of the line of cut
  • Dust extraction and mask use
  • Sharp tools, safe carrying and safe storage

What you go home with

Learners who complete the course and meet the attendance requirement receive an EILA certificate of completion, signed by the principal. Each certificate carries a QR code, so a school, college or employer can verify it instantly.

How you are assessed

Practical work is judged on what you can actually do, not on an exam paper. Your instructor rates each competency as you progress, and those ratings decide whether you are signed off for a certificate.
